Warning Signs

Watch and Listen for Warning Signs

How can you know that you have the right doctor and hospital? There are no guarantees, but you should be aware of certain warning signs about health care providers. The attorneys at the Patton Law Practice ask that you watch and listen for signs of problems.

It's your life. You are entitled to ask questions.
Be an informed and empowered patient.

If you feel uncomfortable with a doctor or hospital, there is a reason why. This may not be the right choice for you.

  • Does the doctor answer your questions? Or does the doctor avoid your questions or tell you it's too complicated? If a doctor or nurse is hesitant to answer your questions or doesn't recognize your right to ask questions, it's a good idea to find another doctor who will respect your right to know what is going on with your own body.
  • You are in charge of your health care. If the doctor or hospital questions your right to make decisions about your health, remember whose life this is. It is yours, and you need and deserve an active role in your own health care decisions.
  • Does the office handle information carefully? Are the records well organized? Do they have a hard time finding some or all of your records? This sort of confusion can lead to operating on the wrong part or prescribing the wrong medicine.
  • Ask questions about alternatives. Does the doctor resist discussing whether there might be another treatment option? Will the doctor explain why the suggested treatment is best? Does your doctor resist the idea of a second opinion?

Know the warning signs. If you feel uncomfortable, there is usually a reason. An important way to avoid medical malpractice is to pay close attention to warning signs.
